The active face (pole face) of a magnetic chuck is composed of a succession of steel poles with high magnetic permeability (A). They are enclosed with non-magnetic material (B).

The permanent magnets (E) and (G) are always active. The magnetic field is shunted and the pole face is not active.

To allow the magnetic field to clamp your work piece, a button is pressed and electric current runs through the coil (F) and reverses the polarity of the magnets (E) and (G). At this point, the chuck becomes a permanent magnet with no electricity running through it.
